How to Layer Up for Winter Fishing Fun
When it comes time to live your life on the water in winter, it can be tough to make your fishing journey without the right clothes. Without layering up properly, you will get cold quickly, and it will cut your fun fishing day short. From fishing shirts to what kind of gloves you should wear, here is your guide to layering up to be comfortable but still able to fish and do other water-related activities in the winter.

Fishing Shirts |
Long Underwear
Your base layer, depending on where you are fishing, is probably long
underwear. If you are fishing in southern Florida, you can probably skip
this part, as it’s mostly just “brisk” there. However, even Florida,
and especially other parts of the country, can get colder. You can also
wear a fleece layer, especially pants. However, this is only half of the
base layer, and you should consider performance-focused shirts for fishing.
Fishing Shirt
The other half of the base layer is the shirt you wear. You have a few
options, but one of the best is any material that is moisture-wicking.
Chances are, you will want to look for a specialized fishing long sleeve shirt.
These will keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer, all
while wicking away moisture and protecting you from harmful UV rays.
Jacket or Hoodie
Next, depending on how cold it is, wear a hoodie or jacket. If it’s
going to be a stormy or cold day, go with a heavy coat, like what you
would wear if you were going deep sea fishing. This will keep you warm
and dry but won’t hamper your ability to move around.
Wool Hat
Invest in a high-quality wool hat to keep your head warm. You also don’t
want to get any cold water in your ears, especially if you’re on a boat
or moving along rocks, as it can mess with your equilibrium. This is
also important if you are fishing from a kayak, as you don’t want to
accidentally flip over in the cold water.
Insulated Gloves
A pair of insulated gloves is best for the coldest conditions. However,
if you aren’t going to be in the water, you can use a pair of fingerless
gloves for better dexterity. Just know that you will lose the
protection in favor of manipulating your rod, bait, boat, or kayak
better.
Thermal Socks and Boots
For your feet, you want thermal socks to keep your feet warm and dry.
Layer those with a sturdy pair of thick waterproof boots, and you are
ready to tackle boat decks, docks, and rocks.
Lip Balm
Don’t forget the lip balm. Not only is it a great way to keep your lips
from cracking, but it can also help de-ice your fly rod guides. Apply a
thin layer every so often to ward off ice buildup on your gear.
