Go Big or Go Home: Tips for Catching Bass in the Fall

Fall is the perfect time to fish for bass. There are feeding frenzies, the biggest bass are out, and with these tips, it’s easy to land a catch. While the weather might be changing and it might be getting cold, you can still use a fishing long sleeve shirt to get out on the water and extend your fishing season.

Timing Tip: Try Midday

While most of the year, you want to head out in the early morning and as the sun sets to have the best chances of catching fish, this is not the case in fall. Instead, you want midday. This is especially true in the late fall. Either way, it gives time for the bass to warm up and get active, ready to start their feeding frenzies in preparation for winter. When the sun is highest, and temperatures are warmest, the fish are most active. You will want to have fishing shirts ready for this time that will wick away moisture and keep you dry while also keeping you cool. Look for shirts that are made with UPF 50+ material, as this will block 98% of the sun’s dangerous UVA and UVB rays. This gives you plenty of time to get out and catch bass.

Bait Tip: Use Lipless Crankbaits

Bass are gorging on baitfish. For your best chance of catching bass, you want to mimic the small fish. You can do this by using lipless crankbaits with a tight wobble. If you’re keeping closer to shore, target vegetation, like tall grass, where bass are lying in wait for small fish like shad to swim by.

Positioning Tip: Look For the Shad

In the fall, bass are also likely to be found in the middle of a lake or in about 15 feet of water, where schools of fish are swimming, hundreds of yards from any structures. In this case, you can use the boat’s underwater radar or simply look for baitfish skimming the surface as they try to escape the bass. Another pro tip: Look up instead of down. If there are birds circling around, chances are there are fish directly under them.

Creek Fishing Tip: Slow Your Roll

Fall is also when bass start to transition from larger bodies of water to creeks. You can use spinnerbaits as the perfect baitfish imitator in creeks. Large-profile spinnerbaits appeal to bass as they are larger targets and use less energy to snack on than smaller fish they have to chase. You will want to slow roll a spinner near vegetation and structures where bass are waiting, such as rocks, docks, and timber.
