Keeping Comfortable in the Canoe: What to Wear and What Not to Wear

Spring in the air means it’s time to dust off the canoe, grab a paddle, and head to your favorite body of water. Canoeing is relaxing and invigorating, soothing and exciting all at once, and it’s perfect for anyone who was practically raised on the water. Canoeing safely and comfortably does require some preparation, but with common sense and long sleeve fishing shirts, there’s not much more enjoyable than a day on the water.

Safety Essentials and Accessories

The most important consideration when canoeing is safety. For beginners, being accompanied by a more experienced canoer for the first few trips is a good idea. Never go canoeing without a life jacket that fits appropriately. To keep the sun off your head and out of your eyes, wear a hat. A stylish baseball cap will work fine. Get a pair of polarized sunglasses for your time in the canoe. They block more UV rays than traditional shades and actually improve in-water vision.

What Not to Wear

Chances are decent that you’re going to get at least a little wet while canoeing. Dressing as though you’re going to get wet, even if you don’t, is the best idea. Broadly that means avoiding fabrics like wool and flannel. Denim is heavy and takes a long time to dry out, so it’s best to leave your jeans at home. Apart from that, a good rule of thumb is that you shouldn’t wear or bring along anything you don’t want to get wet.

What to Wear

When you’re out on the water, trust a high-performance fishing shirt for men or women. They are fabricated to keep you comfortable, dry, and cool. Find a long sleeve performance polyester fishing shirt as they’re designed to wick moisture from your skin and are quick-drying. They allow for total freedom of movement, which is important when you’re paddling. Consider fishing pants or shorts made from a polyester-spandex blend.

Other Canoeing Essentials

Don’t forget sunscreen or forget to reapply it, especially if you get wet or are out on the water for long stretches. Bring high-protein snacks to keep your energy up and more drinking water than you think you’ll need. Invest in a dry bag in which to keep everything you don’t want to get wet. If you’re an avid angler, consider bringing along fishing gear. Some intrepid anglers have even been known to troll from their canoe.
