4 Tips for Keeping Comfortable When Fishing in the Spring

Spring can be one of the most fun and rewarded times to fish. The weather is warming up, fish are starting to shake off the winter sluggishness and are on the hunt. Many anglers haven’t been on the water for months, and those first casts can be like coming home. However, the spring is also often unpredictable, alternating from cold to warm or from clear to a downpour with very little notice. With a little preparation and some quality shirts for fishing, you can stay comfortable and content no matter what the spring throws at you.

Prepare for Rain

It’s going to rain in the spring, no surprises there. Weather reports aren’t always accurate, so any spring fishing should involve preparing for rain. If you haven’t yet included a hooded, waterproof jacket in your fishing apparel, make that a priority. A stylish baseball cap under your hood can provide an extra barrier from the elements, as the bill will keep water out of your face. Don’t forget about keeping your food and drink, electronics, and other gear dry. Pack your dry gear in a waterproof backpack or drybag.

Prepare for the Cold

While the weather is certainly warming up, that doesn’t mean it’s going to be warm. Spring days can lull the unwary angler into a false sense of warm security before delivering a temperature plunge, whipping wind, freezing rain, or even snow in the climates that get it. Even if a spring day dawns beautiful and the forecast calls for nothing but sunshine, be prepared for the cold. The best way to do so is with old-fashioned layering. Wear or bring enough clothing to keep you warm and dry whatever the weather does, but in layers that can be removed and added to keep you comfortable.

Prepare for the Heat

Alternately, sweltering in clothing that’s too warm can also make for a miserable day. For great springtime fishing apparel, look for well-fabricated fishing shirts. A good example is a long sleeve high-performance polyester fishing shirt. They were initially designed with the tournament pros in mind to provide better coverage for protection from the sun while remaining light and breathable enough to keep you cool. The best examples will also be moisture-wicking to keep you dry, antimicrobial to reduce odor, and stain-resistant. Basically, they’re the perfect fishing shirt, excellent for warm days, and for layering on colder ones.

Prepare for the Sun

Whether it’s hot or cold, the sun will likely be out a lot during spring. Along with fine-tuning your apparel choices, be sure to include some useful accessories for sun protection. Don’t forget sunscreen. It can be easier to overlook in the spring than the summer, but you need protection from UV rays during all seasons. Speaking of UV rays, don’t forget a good pair of polarized sunglasses. Always bring plenty of food and water and a dry bag or waterproof backpack to keep them dry.
